Martin Marprelate was the pseudonym under which a series of radical pamphlets were written and published in London. The Marprelate tracts attacked episcopacy and church censorship of the press. The Queen, court and council were outraged and tried to locate the culprit whilst commissioning royal pamphleteers to issue counterattacks. Although several Puritan radicals were imprisoned and executed, the author’s true identity remains a mystery.
