When Pepin died in 714, the Frankish realm plunged into civil
war, with his grandson and heir Theudoald, his widow Plectrude, his

palace in Neustria, Ragenfrid, and the new king Chilperic II waging
a prolonged war for ascendancy. Charles Martel eventually gained
control of the Frankish realm and established the Carolingian
dynasty.
