When Pepin died in 714, the Frankish realm plunged into civil war, with his grandson and heir Theudoald, his widow Plectrude, his illegitimate son Charles Martel, his successor as mayor of the palace in Neustria, Ragenfrid, and the new king Chilperic II waging a prolonged war for ascendancy.
