The Scottish theoretical physicist James Clerk Maxwell did his most important work on the relationship between light, electricity and magnetism. He brought together observations on these three phenomena, which had previously been considered disparate, to produce a set of twenty equations formalising the relationship between these. Although these were first formulated eight years earlier, 1873 saw the publication of a full-scale textbook, A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism.
