The British mathematical physicist George Green was notable for being almost entirely self-educated (having only one year of formal schooling, between the ages of eight and nine). His family owned a mill near Nottingham, and most of his time was spent running the equipment, but alongside this, he managed to write An Essay on the Application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism. This proved a theorem which has since become known as Green's theorem, a problem of geometry which codifies the relationship between a curve in a plane and the region within it.
