Fourth son of Malcom III, he became the heir presumptive of his childless elder brother Edgar, and took over on his death in 1107. He married Sybilla of Normandy, an illegitimate daughter of Henry I of England. The couple had no children, so on Alexander's death the kingdom passed to his younger brother, David. He gained the nickname "the Fierce", probably because of his treatment of some indeterminate attackers, whom Alexander not only repelled but pursued north from his court at Invergowrie, to Ross in the far north of the mainland.
