On 8 July, William Jennings Bryan accepted the Democratic Party nomination and delivered his Cross of Gold Speech. Bryan attacked the notion that gold was the only sound basis an American currency. He stated: You shall not crucify on a cross of gold. In November, Bryan, just 36 years old, lost the presidential election to William McKinley, his Republican opponent.
