John of Salisbury was an author of two important tracts of political philosophy, the Metalogicon and the Policraticus. He is arguably more significant, however, for the many eminent people with whom he worked over the course of his life. He was a pupil in Paris of Peter Abelard and Gilbert of Poitiers. He became an advisor to Archbishop Theobald of Canterbury, and, after his death in 1161, to Thomas Becket. He was a friend of Pope Hadrian IV, the only English Pope in history, and the last post he held was that of Bishop of Chartres.
