On 1 January, William Lloyd Garrison established the
abolitionist newspaper The Liberator. The paper soon gained
nationwide recognition, despite its limited circulation of 3000. It
faced staunch opposition from a number of state legislatures;
however, The Liberator was published for 35 years, until the end of
the Civil War.
