In 1798, war between France and U.S. threatened overFrench raids on U.S. shipping and the rejection of U.S. diplomats. The U.S. Navy (45 ships in total) captured 84 French ships. The USS Constellation took French warship Insurgente in 1799. Napoleon put an end to the French raids after becoming First Consul.
