The French ally with the native Americans in the Connecticut Valley and raid the English settlement of Deerfield, razing the town, massacring 56 inhabitants, and taking 109 survivors captive. This was the result of a combination of factors, including retaliation at what the native Americans deemed illegitimate land use, a perpetual competition for resources, and, in combination with this, French enmity to Britain in Europe over the War of Spanish Succession.
