Through this Act black people were prohibited from owning land outside of designated reserves (approximately 7 per cent of land in the country). It was on the basis of the forced removals of blacks from their lands in particular that Sol T. Plaatje wrote his seminal work regarding this law, Native Life in South Africa (1916).
