On 3 August, the nation’s federal air traffic controllers began an illegal nationwide strike. President Reagan, former union head himself, ordered that all workers return to their jobs forthwith. Most, however, defied the order and President Reagan summarily dismissed all air traffic controllers on 5 August. He used military personnel to fill the jobs.
