Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers on 11 April, and became the first black player in Major League Baseball. Robinson was immediate success on the pitch. During the 1947 season, he led the league in stolen bases and won the Rookie of the Year award. Baseball fans, however, threw bottles and other refuse at him. Robinson also received a number of death threats. After his baseball career ended, Robinson became involved in civil rights activism. In 1962, Robinson was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame, the first black person to be given this honour.
