Historical Context

The island of Hispaniola (now divided between Haiti in the west and the Dominican Republic to the east) is the second largest in the West Indies. It takes its name from “La Isla Espanola”, conferred on it by Columbus during his first voyage to the Americas in 1492. The main city on the south-east coast is called Santo Domingo and it became the initial centre of Spanish colonization in the Caribbean. The city of Santo Domingo received the first cathedral and monastery in the Americas, and the first university (chartered in 1538). At this time the whole island was generally called Santo Domingo.
