George W. Bush was elected to the office of the presidency after a protracted and acrimonious legal battle over electoral college votes in Florida. George Bush lost the general election to Democrat Al Gore. However, after the US Supreme Court awarded Florida's 25 electoral college votes to George Bush, he had enough to beat Gore. The final tally was 271 electoral college votes to 266. Thereafter, Gore conceded defeat. Amid a climate of war, George Bush defeated Democratic senator John Kerry four years later
