Sir John Franklin was a national hero in mid-Victorian England, having served at the Battle of Trafalgar as a young man, and having made made two voyages to the Actic in search of the North-West Passage. His first voyage overland from the Hudson's bay to the western shores of the Arctic Ocean was recorded in his Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the Years 1819, 20, 21 and 22 (1823). His second voyage was made in 1825-7 and explored west from the Mackenzie River to Alaska. His third voyage involved two ships, the Terror and the Erebus with a compliment of 129 officers and men.
