Italy signs the reaty of Ucciali (Wuchale) with King Menelek of Ethiopia. By the terms of this agreement, various territories previously part of Ethiopia are ceded to Italy, forming the basis of the modern state of Eritrea. In return, Italy promises to provide Menelek with financial and military support.
