On the 8th of May, 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act became law. Chinese immigration to the United States was suspended for ten years, following anti-Chinese feeling in areas such as California, where gold was becoming scarcer, and the settlers sought to blame Chinese workers for low wage levels and economic decline.
