With the successful siege of the port city of La Rochelle, Louis VIII of France recaptured a key part of the Poitou region, which had been under English control since 1154. It had fallen into English possession as part of the Angevin Empire that was transferred to the English crown with the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry I.
