Formed by Isaac Butt (1813-79), a conservative Protestant lawyer and former professor of political economy at Trinity College Dublin who feared the secession of Ireland from the United Kingdom. Butt sought to ally all nationalist groups behind a campaign for an Irish Parliament subordinated to the Westminster Parliament. He lost control of the movement in 1878 to Charles Stewart Parnell.
