Barth is one of the greatest of the European explorers of Africa (1850-1855). He journeyed across the Sahara, the traversed the continent from Lake Chad and Bagirmi on the east to Timbuktu (September 1853) on the west and Cameroon on the south. He studied the topography, history, civilizations, languages, and resources of the countries he visited and even appears to have learned a few African languages. His meticulously documented journal has become n invaluable source for the study of 19th century Sub-Saharan Africa.
