Louis Joseph Papineau leads a rebellion in Lower Canada, which is sparked off by conflicts between the governor and legislative councils, and the elected assemblies. The rebellion also has its roots in the opposition between French and British groups in Canada. The rebels are successful at the Battle of Saint-Denis on 22nd November, but are routed two days later at St Charles.
