More formally entitled “The Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery Throughout the British Dominions”, the Anti-Slavery Society was established by William Wilberforce and Thomas Buxton with the aim of abolishing any form of slavery in the British Empire. The Society was most effective and instrumental in having the Slavery Abolition Act passed by the British parliament in August 1833.
