The Law Society was first established in 1823 as 'The London Law Institution', by a group of solicitors determined to raise the reputation and standards of their profession. Two years later, it gained a new form when it dropped the qualifier 'London' and became instead 'The Law Society', a body with a managing committee and a national remit. In 1831 it obtained a royal charter, becoming a recognised body representing all those legal roles other than that of barrister, which had previously been looked down upon as relatively lowly.
