17 November 1755 to 16th September 1824. Louis-Stanislas-Xavier de Bourbon, Comte de Provence. Grandson of Louis XV and brother of Louis XVI who was executed in 1793. He declared himself Louis XVIII in 1795 and became a centre for reactionary émigré forces. After the defeat of Napoleon I and the entry of allied armies to Paris in March 1814, Louis XVIII became the first king in the restoration Bourbon monarchy of France. He promised to rule as a constitutional monarch and accept many of the changes made since 1789, and these principles were enshrined in the Charte constitutionelle [Constitutional Charter] adopted on 4 June 1814.
