The Russian army under General Kutusov stopped the Napoleonic approach about 1 km west of Moscow. Around 250,000 men were deployed in about equal numbers on each side. About 80,000 men were killed. Napoleon won a narrow victory and occupied Moscow a week later. The victory was pyrrhic as the abandoned town had caught fire. With winter beginning earlier than expected, the army had to retreat. Fewer than 10,000 men would return in a fit state for combat.
