This was an important step in the application of stationary steam power in factories, and of particular importance to the history of Manchester where there was ready access to the sea through the port of Liverpool, and which could therefore readily use raw cotton imported from the United States. However, Manchester is situated on the Cheshire plain so there was insufficient power from mountain streams to power mills. Following the successful application of steam power to the Crompton spinning mule, Manchester quickly became one of the largest concentrations of spinning and weaving macines in the world.
