By Peace of Campo Formio between France and Austria, Austria cedes Belgium and Lombardy to France and obtains Istria, Dalmatia and Venice; and by a secret agreement Austria agrees to future cession of left bank of Rhine, from Basle to Andernach, to France and the free navigation of the Rhine in return for French help to acquire archbishopric of Salzburg and part of Bavaria.
