Bonaparte sent to attack Austrians in Italy. Hoche sent across the Rhine. Bonaparte hugely successful, captures Milan and Mantua and threatens Vienna from the south. Bonaparte takes it upon himself to establish peace terms with Austria, obtaining the cession of Belgium and Lombardy whilst allowing Austria to annex Venice. Act of insubordination by Bonaparte, but the Directory is prevented from acting against Bonaparte because partial renewal of the legislative chambers in April 1797 leads to a majority in favour of constitutional monarchy. Bonaparte and Hoche recalled with their armies to Paris.
