Constitution of Year 3: Executive power in the hands of a 5-person Directory. Legislative power in the hands of two elected assemblies (Council of the Ancients, Council of the 5). Elections for two new Chambres under the new constitution raises risk of a return of the monarchists. Prevented by required two thirds of deputies in the new Chambres to be ex-members of the Convention. This leads to royalist revolts in Normandy and Brittany (Chouannerie, described in Blazac's Les Chouans, 1829) and the formation of a monarchist army abroad under the leadership of the comte de Provence who takes the name Louis XVIII.
