The execution of Louis XVI leads to formation of grand coalition of European powers – Austria, Prussia, Piedmont-Sardinia, Naples, Spain, German princes and the Papal states, in effect allying all the powers of continental Europe against the French revolution. The challenge posed will be enormous, but will galvanize France into a mobilization of national resources of the kind never before seen in history. It will also strengthen the repressive force of “The Terror” as any questioning of the State will be branded as treason.
