The first Revolutionary constitution was inspired by the constitutional monarchy which had been established by the English Glorious Revolution of 1688, with some elements added from the example of the United States. It proposes a constitutional monarchy with the franchise extended to all owners of moderate amounts of property. The reluctance of Louis XVI to accept such a limited role was to prove fatal to himself and to this idea of the constitution.
