The Marathas was a federation of Hindu peoples living in western and central India who had allied against British expansion. In 1778 Warren Hastings, fearing they might be persuaded to support the French (who had entered an alliance with the Americans in their war of independence and still coveted an Indian empire), engaged them in a campaign which would continue in fits and starts over the next four years. There would be two further wars with the Marathas, in 1803-5, put down by Arthur Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) whose brother, Lord Wellesley, was governor-general, and in November 1817 to early 1818. The final war completed British domination of India.
