Technically, a mere side-show to the European struggle known as the “War of the Austrian Succession”, but among the first symptoms of the coming struggle between France and Britain for dominance over Indian markets. The French here were playing to their own strengths, since the Compagnie des Indes was particularly strong in south-east India. Eventually, however, the provocation would prove fatal, since British revenues from the India trade were four times as large and would prove decisive in funding the coming conflict.
