This series of battles ended the Swedish Empire, and prefigured Russia’s dominant position in Baltic Sea and its rise as a major player in European politics. The war began in 1700 as a coordinated attack on Sweden by a coalition of Russia, Denmark-Norway, and Saxony (also the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1701 to 1706 and from 1709, and Prussia and Hanover from 1715), and ended in 1721 with the Treaty of Nystad and the Stockholm treaties.
