Henri IV of France, ruled 1589-1610. He became King of Navarre on the death of his mother in 1572 and king of France on the death of his cousin Henri III in 1589. Henri de Bourbon was born in Pau in 1553 and was assassinated in Paris in 1610. The son of the Huguenot Antoine de Bourbon, a direct descendant of the royal Capetian line, and the Calvinist Jeanne d’Albret, Queen of Navarre, his father had been involved in the Amboise conspiracy (see Huguenots) with his brother, the Prince de Condé, but then turned Catholic and was named lieutenant general of the French Army and died shortly afterwards from wounds received when fighting the Protestants.
