The Union of Utrecht allied the provinces and cities resisting Spanish rule in the area now occupied by Belgium and the Netherlands: in the north, Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, Zutphen, Overijssel, Friesland, and Groningen; and in the south, the cities of Brabant and Flanders: Antwerp, Breda, Ghent, Bruges and Ypres. The new state was named the United Provinces of the Netherlands and became known as “Dutch Republic” or the “States-General”.
