Huguenot is a term of uncertain origins used to name Protestants in France. Luther’s ideas achieved a diffuse interest and support in French universities and seminaries from the 1520 to 1530s, but, following the publication of Calvin’s Institutio Christianae religionis first in1536, with later elaborated editions, French Protestantism became progressively Calvinist.
Vigorously prosecuted by the Roman Catholic establishment around Paris, the Huguenots tended to achieve dominance the further from Paris one went: in the south-east (the Dauphiné around Grenoble), the Languedoc, the west (Poitou) and south-west (Guyenne, Bearn).
