Charles de Habsburg, born 24 February 1500, died 21 September 1556, was the son of king Philip I of Castile, and Joan the Mad, and the grandson of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy, as well as of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. He also inherited from is father the kingdom of Burgundy and its vast possessions (including Burgundy, Franche-Comté, Lorraine, Alsace, Luxembourg, Picardy, Artois, Flanders, Brabant, Zeeland and Holland û in essence, but not exclusively, much of the land between the valleys of the Meuse and the Rhine). In 1516 he became king of Spain, and in 1519, on the death of Maximilian, he became king of Germany (crowned 1520), Archduke of Austria and the Holy Roman Emperor. He …
