Charles de Habsburg, born 24 February 1500, died 21 September 1556, was the son of king Philip I of Castile, and Joan the Mad, and the grandson of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy, as well as of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. He also inherited from is father the kingdom of Burgundy and its vast possessions (including Burgundy, Franche-Comté, Lorraine, Alsace, Luxembourg, Picardy, Artois, Flanders, Brabant, Zeeland and Holland û in essence, but not exclusively, much of the land between the valleys of the Meuse and the Rhine).
