The Romanian Revolution, the last popular movement to overthrow the communist regimes in East-Central Europe, was a series of increasingly violent riots and fighting in late December 1989 (lasting from December 17th to the 25th) that overthrew the government of the communist president Nicolae Ceausescu. After a summary trial, Ceausescu and his wife were executed on Christmas day of 1989. The initial spark of the riots, on December 16th, was ignited in TImisoara, in the westernmost region of Romania, as a protest against the attempt by the government to evict a dissident, Hungarian Reformed pastor László Tokés.
