With its headquarters in Atlanta, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was established by the Reverend Martin Luther King to aid local civil rights organizations striving for full equality in the United States. The group assisted in the larger civil rights movement through leadership-training programs, education projects, and voter-registration drives. The SCLC played a large part in the 1963 civil rights march on Washington, D.C.
