The Soviet launch of Sputnik on 4 October 1957, and then of Sputnik II carrying the dog Laika on 3 November 1957, displayed Soviet pre-eminence in rocketry and space science. It galvanised U.S. efforts and prompted the foundation of NASA in 1958.
