In an attempt to bring religious unity to his two kingdoms Charles I insisted that the English Book of Common Prayer be adopted by the Scottish Kirk. The Calvinist and Presbyterian Church of Scotland was intensely opposed to this. It provoked riots and prompted the formation of a National Covenant.
