Van Dyck (1599-1641) born in Antwerp and by 1630 had risen to be court painter to the Habsbourg Governor of Flanders. Charles I was a passionate patron of the arts and encouraged Van Dyck's move to London, knighting him shortly after his arrival in April 1632 and granting him a pension and many commissions. Sir Anthony Van Dyck, as he became known, would continue in the royal service until his death in 1641.
