Prince Charles and the Duke of Buckingham, who have travelled to Madrid to negotiate with Philip IV over the Prince's marriage, leave the court in frustration and anger. Spain insists that it will only send the Infanta Maria to England when Roman Catholics obtain religious liberty in England, something that the English Parliament is highly unlikely to agree to. For his part, Prince Charles is angered by Philip's refusal to support Elector Palatine Frederick V.
