Having attempted to establish a Virginia colony near Roanoke Island (now in North Carolina) between 1584 and 1589, Ralegh led an expedition to the Orinoco River (now in Venezuela) in 1595, looking for the famed El Dorado, the city of gold. He published his account of this voyage as The Discoverie of Guiana in 1596.
