The Swedish estates meet at Nyköping, and elect the seventeen-year-old Gustavus II (known in English by the Latinized Gustavus Adolphus) as king. In response to this decision, Duke John of Ístergotland abjures the throne. The new King appoints Axel Oxenstjerna as his Chancellor.
