The Church of Scotland, which is a Protestant established Church founded in the Reformation with the leadership of John Knox, saw a secession of approximately 450 out of the 1200 ministers of the General Assembly. This was the culmination of a dispute which had been ongoing for the past ten years, over the issue of who had the right to choose a parish minister. The Evangelical party, in a majority in the General Assembly in the early 1830s, had passed a Veto Act, which allowed parishioners unhappy with their landlord's choice to veto it. Now, however, the House of Lords decided that this was an illegal change in the law, and overturned the Assembly's legislation.
