Pope Pius V issues the bull Regnans in Excelsis, excommunicating Queen Elizabeth I of England and absolving her subjects from allegiance to her. The bull is subsequently published in London in May by a Catholic, John Felton, provoking harsh anti-Catholic legislation in response.
