Sir Thomas Wyatt, who had been involved in the attempt to place Lady Jane Grey on the English throne, had provoked a rebellion to try to prevent Queen Mary's marriage to Philip II of Spain. His rebel force of about 2000 men marched from Kent towards London, and reached Southwark, but was unable to cross London Bridge. Wyatt crossed Kingston Bridge instead, and marched on London, but was definitively defeated on 9th July.
